Discovering History Through Property Records: The Story of Magnolia Hall

One of the things I’ve enjoyed most about diving into old property records is the way they bring the past to life. For me, researching Magnolia Hall has been especially meaningful—not only because of its rich history but because it became part of my family’s story when my parents purchased it in 2023. The property wasn’t called Magnolia Hall until we renamed it. For decades, it was commonly known as the Wasden House, a name tied to its long history before our chapter began.

The house itself was built in 1916 by William R. Turner, a key figure in its story. As I dig through property records, I’ve uncovered details that continue to build a picture of the home’s past and the community that surrounds it.

One of my favorite discoveries so far is a plat from 1907, a document that predates the house by several years. This survey of the property and its surrounding neighborhood reveals that Magnolia Hall spans three lots—7, 8, and 9—in Block H.

It’s fascinating to think about the world as it was back then. The plat seems to reflect a time when the area was being subdivided for development, with the neighborhood just starting to take shape. That early document connects Magnolia Hall not only to its lot but also to the story of a growing community.

Now that my family owns this home, we’ve added our own chapter to its long history. Naming it Magnolia Hall felt like a way to honor the beauty and legacy of the property while making it uniquely ours. Each record I uncover—whether it’s the 1907 plat or notes about William R. Turner—reminds me how history is both deeply personal and endlessly fascinating.

If you’ve ever wondered about the history of your own home, we’d love to help you uncover its story.
